Σκιάθος, 1 Μαΐου 2026Πρωτομαγιά.
Από νωρίς οι νέες φόρεσαν τα κόκκινα κολοβόλια, τα καλά τους, και βγήκαν για τον Μάη.
Στα χέρια κρατούσαν λουλούδια κομμένα από τις πλαγιές και τα μονοπάτια, εκεί όπου ο τόπος ανθίζει πρώτος.
Στο Κάστρο, όπως και στ’ άλλα ξωκκλήσια του νησιού, η μέρα αυτή είχε τον δικό της τρόπο να τιμάται. Έπλεκαν στεφάνια με παπαρούνες, μαργαρίτες και μυρωδάτα κλαδιά, και τα κρεμούσαν στις πόρτες, για καλοτυχία και φύλαξη του σπιτιού.Δεν ήταν μονάχα στολίδι.
Ήταν ευχή. Ήταν σημάδι πως ο κύκλος της άνοιξης είχε πια ανοίξει.Το πλέξιμο του στεφανιού γινόταν με ησυχία και προσοχή, σαν μικρή τελετουργία. Καθε λουλούδι έμπαινε στη θέση του σαν να είχε τον λόγο του να βρίσκεται εκεί.
Τίποτε δεν ήταν τυχαίο.Και οι νέες, με τα κόκκινα καλά τους, έμοιαζαν και οι ίδιες μέρος της γιορτής — σαν να κρατούσαν επάνω τους λίγο από την άνθηση του τόπου.
Η Πρωτομαγιά δεν ερχόταν μόνο ως χαρά της εποχής, αλλά σαν κάλεσμα.
Σαν ένας τρόπος να υποδεχθεί κανείς το νέο φως.-Σ.Σ.

Early in the morning, the young women put on their red kolovolia, their finest dress, and went out for May. In their hands they carried flowers gathered from the hillsides and old footpaths, where the island first comes into bloom.At Kastro, as in the island’s small chapels, this day had its own way of being honoured. Wreaths were woven with poppies, daisies and fragrant branches, then hung at doorways as blessings and protection for the household.They were never mere decorations. They were wishes. Signs that the cycle of spring had fully opened.The weaving of the wreath was done quietly and with care, almost as a small ritual. Each flower was placed as though it had a reason to be there. Nothing was accidental.And the young women, in their red festive dress, seemed themselves part of the celebration — as though they carried upon them something of the island’s flowering.May Day did not arrive only as a joy of the season, but as an invocation.
